Transportation in Guwahati

Guwahati, located in the state of Assam in Northeast India, has a well-developed transportation network consisting of rail, road, and air transportation. It is also known as the gateway to North eastern India.

Guwahati Junction is the major railway station in the city and serves as the gateway to Northeast India. It is well-connected to major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. There are several daily express and superfast trains that connect Guwahati with other parts of the country.
Guwahati railway station is operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway zone of the Indian Railways. The station has several platforms and is equipped with various passenger amenities such as waiting rooms, food stalls, book stalls, and more.
In addition, Guwahati railway station is also an important freight hub in the region, handling the transportation of goods and commodities. The region is dotted with hills, forests, and rivers, and the train journeys from Guwahati offer a breathtaking view of the landscape. Guwahati is connected to other parts of Assam and neighboring states by an extensive network of highways. National Highway 27 and National Highway 37 pass through Guwahati and connect it to other parts of the region. There are also state highways and several well-maintained roads that make travel within the city easy.

The National Highway 27 (NH 27) connects Guwahati to other major cities in Assam such as Tezpur, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh. NH 27 also connects Guwahati to the neighboring state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Apart from these national highways, there are several state highways and other roads that connect Guwahati to other parts of Assam and the northeastern region of India. The city also has a well-developed public transportation system, including buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws, that makes it easy to travel within the city.


Guwahati is served by Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, which is located about 20 km west of the city center. The airport is well-connected to major cities in India like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, as well as international destinations like Bangkok, Paro, and Singapore. Several airlines operate regular flights to and from Guwahati, including Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Vistara, and Druk Air.

It is also the primary airport of North-East India. The airport covers an area of 656 acres. The Airport Authority of India has plan to make this airport a major international airport of India connecting mainly the south east Asia with India, and also serves as Indian Air Force base.
